Career
Sven gets his start in biathlon at the age of twelve. After graduating from the Oberhof Sports School in 1989, he celebrates his first major success as GDR junior champion. He is highly successful in his first World Cup season 1992/93. He wins his first sprint race after his World Cup debut in Kontiolahti. At his first World Cup in Borewez in 1993, he wins gold and bronze with the relay team. In 1994, Sven wins the gold medal with the relay team at the Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer. In 1995 and 1997, Sven again becomes world champion in relay and once more winning the gold medal with the team at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano. At the following World Cups, Sven becomes world champion four more times, winning a total of 20 medals at World Cups during his career. In 2006, at his last Olympic Winter Games in Turin, he secures his first individual Olympic title with a gold medal in sprint. He then also wins the gold medal alongside the whole team. After the 2006/07 season, Sven ends his active biathlon career. Since then he has been a consultant and biathlon expert at the German broadcaster ZDF. In addition, he continues to be a brand ambassador for Viessmann.
First World Cup victory, world champion and success in the Sprint World Cup
In the same season in which he makes his World Cup debut, Sven claims his first World Cup victory in sprint in Kontiolahti. He secures the gold and bronze medals with the relay team at the 1993 World Championships in Borovets. Sven wins the sprint overall ranking in the World Cup at the end of the season.
Olympic champion
Sven becomes Olympic champion with the German relay team at the 1994 Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer. He wins the bronze medal in individual. As in the previous season, Sven wins the sprint overall ranking in the World Cup.
World champion
Sven becomes world champion with the German relay team at the 1995 World Championships in Antholz.
Vice world champion
Sven becomes vice world champion with the relay team at the 1996 World Championships in Ruhpolding.
World champion and World Cup overall winner
After securing the silver medal last season, the German men’s relay team with Sven wins the world champion title at the 1997 World Championships in Osrblie. At the end of the season, Sven wins the overall ranking in the World Cup for the first time.
Olympic champion once again
Sven becomes vice world champion again with the relay team at the 1998 World Championships in Hochfilzen. The German relay team with Sven is able to draw on its success of the last season, when it secured the 1997 world champion title, and win Olympic gold at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano. He wins the overall ranking in the Pursuit World Cup at the end of the season.
World champion
Sven is highly successful at the 1999 World Championships in Kontiolahti. After winning the bronze medal in the pursuit race, he becomes two-time world champion, securing the title in the individual competition and in mass start, which was introduced this year for this first time. Sven is thus the first mass start world champion ever. He wins the overall World Cup for the second time at the end of the season.
Bronze at the World Championships
Sven wins bronze with the relay team at the World Championships in Lahti in 2000. A serious cycling accident leads to a subsequent pause in training of several weeks.
World Championship bronze
Just as he did two years before, Sven wins the bronze medal in the pursuit race at the 2001 World Championships in Pokljuka. He also wins the bronze in mass start.
Two silver medals in the Olympics, vice world champion
Sven wins the silver medal in both the sprint and relay competitions at the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. He also wins silver in mass start at the 2002 World Championships in Oslo.
World champion
Sven becomes vice world champion in mass start and world champion with the relay team at the 2003 World Championships in Khanty-Mansiysk.

In 2004, Sven becomes world champion again with the relay team at the World Championships in Oberhof, his hometown.
Two-time vice world champion
Sven wins the silver medal in sprint and mass start and the bronze medal in the pursuit race at the 2005 World Championships in Hochfilzen.
Two-time Olympic champion
Sven becomes two-time Olympic champion at his final Olympic Winter Games in Turin in 2006, winning the gold medal both in sprint and with the relay team. He also secures bronze in the pursuit race.
World Championship bronze, retirement
In 2007, Sven wins the bronze medal with the relay team at his last World Championships in Antholz. He ends his active biathlon career after the season and has been brand ambassador and worked as a biathlon expert at ZDF ever since.
