Career
While in elementary school, Philipp discovers biathlon for himself and starts training in his home town of Nesselwang. From 2001 to 2010 he shifts through a range of stations – from trial races to the DSV Student Cup and the German Cup, Philipp takes everything in stride. After graduating from school in 2011, he joins the German Armed Forces ski platoon in Mittenwald. Three years later he makes his international debut at the Junior World Cup in Presque Isle and wins gold with the relay team. After that, he races regularly as a starting competitor in the IBU Cup. In 2016/17 Philipp gets his first World Cup appearance in Kontiolahti. In 2020 he takes fourth in the individual World Cup on the Pokljuka and thus achieves his best place in a World Cup race to date. One season later, he wins his first World Cup race with the men's relay team, finishes second in the IBU Cup overall standings and is runner-up in the European Championships. Things continue to look up; in 2021/22 he is an integral part of the World Cup team, he qualifies for his first Olympic Games in Beijing and narrowly misses out on a medal there with the relay team.
Junior world champion
Philipp wins the gold medal with the relay team at the Junior World Championships in Presque Isle.
Numerous events in the IBU Cup
Philipp competes in the IBU Cup in the 2014/15 season.
World Cup debut
Due to his outstanding results, including third place in sprint in the IBU Cup in Obertilliach, Philipp is given his first opportunity to compete in the World Cup. He makes his debut in Kontiolahti and takes 34th place.
First top 10 placement in the World Cup
This season, Philipp competes in the season opener in Östersund, but falls short of the points ranking. At the subsequent World Cup in Hochfilzen, he takes ninth place in sprint and thus secures his first top 10 placement in a World Cup race. Philipp competes in the IBU Cup again after the new year.
Participation in the World Championships
Philipp kicks off the season in the IBU Cup and, thanks to his outstanding results, qualifies for the World Cup. Due to his exceptional performance, he’s then also given the opportunity to participate in the World Championships in Östersund, where his best result is 12th place in sprint.
IBU Cup victories, top 10 placements in the World Cup
Philipp secures many top placements in the IBU Cup this season. He wins the pursuit race in Sjusjøen and takes first place in sprint in Brezno. At the 2020 World Cup in Pokljuka, he just misses a podium finish and secures his best placement to date with fourth place in an individual race in the World Cup. Philipp makes it into the top 15 in a World Cup race nine times between 2017 and 2020.
First World Cup victory
After two surgeries on the groin, the preparation for the 2020/21 season is not without complications for Philipp. Due to the training gap, he is still not ready for the World Cup team at the beginning and starts in the IBU Cup. With consistently good performances, he secures second place in the overall standings there; at the European Championships, he wins silver with the mixed relay. At the end of the season, he is allowed to participate in the World Cup events again and convinces especially as the final runner in the victory of the German men's relay team in Nove Mesto. This is not only the first triumph of a German men's relay team after four years, but also Philipp's first World Cup victory.
Firm component in the World Cup team and participation in the Olympic Games
This season Philipp is again part of the World Cup team from the beginning and makes himself indispensable for the DSV squad after strong individual performances. In addition to several top-10 finishes, he reaches second place with the relay team in Ruhpolding. Consequently, Philipp gets the ticket for the Olympic Games in Beijing and just misses a medal there with the relay team.
